As reported earlier today, you’ll get not one but two choices of starters in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. While one of your friends in the game will let you pick between Chespin, Fennekin or Froakie, the games’ Pokémon Professor will offer you Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle—all three with their own Mega Evolutions, shown below.

As previously detailed, Mega Evolutions are a temporary evolution that take place during battles in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. In order for them to activate, your Pokémon will need to be holding a Mega Stone unique to it. However, it has been revealed that there’s a second requirement as well—you’ll need to obtain a bracelet called the Mega Ring, which holds a mysterious stone called the Key Stone.

The Key Stone and the Mega Stone together trigger Mega Evolutions in battle. Once the battle ends, the Pokémon in question returns to its normal state.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y will be available worldwide on October 12th.
