Past Monster Hunter titles offered the “Arena Challenge” feature, where players went up against monsters using pre-set gear and items. In Monster Hunter 4, the challenge is back with two new stages and features, where you’ll get to test your hunting skills to see if you have what it takes to face the fearsome monsters in the arena.
To start an Arena Challenge, you’ll be prompted to speak to the NPC in red at the Arena counter. Similar to past Arena Challenges, you’ll be required to pick out of a set of gear which suits your play style.
Upon clearing an Arena Challenge, it will record your time and will have your top-3 best times ranked for the quest. Additionally, it will also indicate the ranking of other players whom you’ve shared Guild Cards with. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to carry in your own equipment or items, nor will you be able to carry material out of the arena. Food effects won’t affect you in here, either.
Once you enter, you’ll start out at the camp base, where you’ll be able to prep yourself before going in.
Once you’re in the arena, you’ll have access to the fence, which is activated by a button. This fence will come in handy while fighting a set of two monsters or more, by allowing you to split them apart and take care of them one at a time. However, if you don’t time the fence button right, you’ll end up having to fight two monsters with much less space, so there will also be a risk to using the feature.
In Monster Hunter 4, there will also be various types of arenas such as the two story stages shown above. These have two elevation levels, but they won’t have any fences. The stages will often vary according to the type of monster you’re up against.
Monster Hunter 4 is slated for release on September 14th for Nintendo 3DS.
