Japan’s Nintendo DS video download service is getting off to a slow start, but adding Pokemon flicks will give AM3 a boost. Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back will be available to current DS Vision customers as a download on August 20. The full movie will cost 500 yen ($4.50), a reasonable price for a 10 year old animated film.
A few weeks’ later four Pokemon DS vision packs will hit retail stores on September 11. A special edition bundle with the DS Vision adapter and a microSD card carrying Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew will go on sale for 4280 yen ($40). Standalone microSD cards will Pokemon: The Movie 2000, Pokemon 3: The Movie, and Pokemon 4Ever will cost 2,980 yen each ($27). People who purchase a Pokemon movie package at retail will be able to pick up a DS Vision hardware adapter for an additional 1,499 yen ($13).
On second thought, maybe this won’t help AM3 out. Having Pokemon is great, but paying 2,980 yen for a movie you can only watch on the DS is a bit much. The package art for the packages is pretty nice though for something that isn’t even a DS game.
