At E3, Nintendo announced they would be publishing Professor Layton and the Last Specter for the Nintendo DS in North America this year. Now, we have a release date.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter is scheduled for an October 17th release. It’s the first game in a new prequel trilogy of Layton games.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle for the Nintendo 3DS is the second game in this new trilogy. That one doesn’t have a release date yet.

Some of you may recall that Brownie Brown developed a bonus role-playing game included within Professor Layton and the Last Specter, titled “Professor Layton’s London Life”. This will be included in the U.S. version as well, and will be unlocked from the get-go, unlike the original Japanese version.

London Life has you residing in Professor Layton’s version of alternate London, and you go about undertaking quests for the city’s residents. Level 5 and Nintendo say this RPG mode is over 100 hours long.

Europe will see Last Specter sometime in November. In Europe, it’ll be released under the title Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call.
