Sun Denshi, the parent company of Sunsoft, is moving back into digital entertainment, but they aren’t using the Sunsoft label to make brand new Wii games. Sun Denshi has plans to create an original viewer application for WiiWare and electronically distribute comics. The service launches this summer and Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Space Battleship Yamato (pictured) and the awesome anime Daft Punk music videos, will be creating a comic for the service.
The unanswered question is how much will Sun Denshi charge for the service. A few hundred yen might make this an alternative to purchasing physical comics, but the limited storage space on the Wii is an issue. Each manga volume should weigh in significantly less than a WiiWare game, but the Wii isn’t designed to archive comics. Sun Denshi may have better luck charging readers a monthly fee to read all the manga they can with their program.
