Europe got Toki Tori as part of their WiiWare launch line up and now the egg gathering puzzle game is on the North American WiiWare store. The Wii doesn’t have achievements or trophies, but Toki Tori has a clever way to record player progress. Toki Tori essentially has progress reports in the form of diary entries saved on the Wii Message Board. Another creative gameplay idea is allowing a friend or parent to draw hints with a second Wii Remote. Otherwise, Toki Tori retains the puzzle/platformer formula with an emphasis on how to use items throughout the 70 levels. Since the game costs 1,000 Wii Points ($10) each stage costs about 14 cents.
I was curious about Protöthea when it was rumored as a WiiWare game. However, after playing Ubisoft’s shmup port it’s pretty disappointing. It feels like Ubisoft forced motion control into the game by using remote motions to aim the ship’s cannon. At 500 Wii Points ($5) Protöthea could have at least been an interesting novelty, but 1,000 Wii Points is way too much to spend on a slipshod shooter when games like Everyday Shooter and Omega Five come out around the same price.
And from the Virtual Console vault is Ninja Combat, a Neo Geo beat ‘em up from the 90s. The two characters you have at the start of Ninja Combat are graphically the same except the color of their outfit. Joe wears red and Hayabusa wears blue. However, you’re not stuck playing the same fighter, you get to swap characters between levels. Ninja Combat runs for 900 Wii Points ($9).
