We haven’t heard much news of Shin’en’s upcoming WiiWare racer, Fast: Racing League, in quite a while. Today, however, Shin’en announced a release date for Europe: May 27th. A release date for the U.S. will be announced soon as well.

Fast looks reminiscent of both the Wipeout and F-Zero games, which is a fact that Shin’en are well aware of. Where it differs from those titles is in the way it plays. Shin’en have a catchphrase for Fast — “Shift your phase” — which refers to the track changing between positive (bright) and negative (dark) phases.

While racing, you need to “shift the phase” of your own vehicle to match that of the track in order to race efficiently. For example, hitting a speedup region on the track while in the correct phase will speed you up. On the other hand, hitting it in the wrong phase will slow you down.

Besides speed boosts, shifting phases is also designed to have other effects during races. Some track regions allow you to jump while in the right phase; others allow you to cling to tunnel ceilings by shifting to the appropriate phase as required.

We’ll keep you updated as Shin’en announce a U.S. release date for Fast: Racing League. In the mean time, you can read all about the development of Fast in our interview from October.
