The trailer for School Days on the official Abema X (formerly Twitter) considers this a holiday anime that’ll really spice up your Xmas Eve. It introduces scenes of Makoto’s romances with the girls in his life. Then, at the end, we can see Sekai running up to Makoto to give him a nice big hug.

Jokes aside, School Days is a visual novel and anime that focuses on Makoto, a high school student who falls in love with schoolmate Kotonoha. Another classmate, Sekai, who was helping Makoto with his relationship with Kotonoha, becomes jealous because she also falls for Makoto. However, Makoto doesn’t reciprocate her feelings. School Days features a lot of bad endings, usually involving the gruesome deaths of Makoto, Kotonoha, or Sekai.

The show came out in 2007. So why is it still so relevant today? School Days is infamous on the Internet for its highly dislikeable characters. Many netizens consider Makoto to be utter trash. When the final episode aired in Japan, a similar murder case had happened in real life, which caused TV stations to censor it with stock footage of a boat. Online communities made fun of this, leading to the “Nice Boat” meme.

School Days will air on Abema, and if you want to catch it with English subtitles, it’s also on streaming sites like Crunchyroll.
