A Hollywood movie adaptation of Sega arcade classic The House of the Dead is in production. Paul W.S. Anderson, who is the creative behind the Resident Evil series of movies, is working on it as director, producer, and writer.
Fans of horror movies and games (and horror movies based on such games) might be familiar with Anderson’s name already. As mentioned earlier, he’s worked on the Resident Evil movies—the ones starring Milla Jovovich—in major positions. For example, he wrote, directed, and produced Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The only ones he didn’t direct were Apocalypse and Extinction. Other producers who’ll be working on The House of the Dead alongside Anderson are Jeremy Bolt, Toru Nakahara (Sega), Dimitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Dan Jevons. The last three are from Story Kitchen. Timothy I. Stevenson will be the executive producer.
There aren’t any details thus far about the The House of the Dead movie. It’ll have a run time of around 90 minutes, and will focus on the characters trying to escape the titular house. The press release describes Anderson’s vision as one that immerses the audience into the original game’s thrill ride-like experience.
The House of the Dead came out for arcades in 1997, featuring a gun-shaped controller you could pick up and shoot enemies with. In the game, the camera pans through hordes of zombies. Players must kill all of the enemies in the area before it traverses to the next one, and there are boss battles you must clear before you can beat the game. There are different endings depending on how well you do. The last entry in the series was The House of the Dead: Remake, which came out in 2022 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch.
