The ending of a horror game can make or break the whole experience. However, any game with multiple endings like the Silent Hill 2 remake is going to spark debates about which is best.
With the Silent Hill 2 introducing two new endings, the game now boasts a total of eight conclusions. However, a couple of these were designed purely for humor. Let’s take a look at what I consider to be the best ones to get.
Obviously massive Silent Hill 2 spoilers ahead. Also, this list is subjective. I’m gonna dive into what I think is the canon ending, which may not jive with your thoughts on that matter.
What are the best endings in the Silent Hill 2 remake?
Dog Ending
This absurd conclusion is iconic for its unexpected humor in an otherwise dark and serious game. In this ending, James discovers that a dog has been controlling everything in Silent Hill from an Observation Room.
He confronts the dog, for whatever reason, in Polish, blaming the dog for his ordeal. While this is clearly a joke ending, it has become legendary for its sheer randomness. It’s my favorite of the two joke endings.
Leave Ending
The Leave ending sees James confront the guilt he feels for his crime against Mary and ultimately accept it. He then leaves Silent Hill with Laura, where it’s implied he will adopt her as Mary planned to do. Certainly a happy ending all things considered.
This ending is often thought of as the “canon” one, and even some developers have hinted at this. I like that it gives a hopeful outcome for Laura, the only innocent character in the story. However, the idea of James simply walking away from the events of Silent Hill 2 has always felt a bit too optimistic for me. It’s the “good ending,” but doesn’t align with the overall tone of the story as the one I feel is canon.
In Water/Stillness Ending
I believe the In Water ending is the true canon conclusion of Silent Hill 2. In this ending, James accepts his guilt and drives his car into Toluca Lake. The Stillness ending, a new addition in the remake, adds to In Water. James briefly speaks with Mary, who consoles him and tells him she’s waiting for him. It’s a haunting way to conclude his story.
I feel that this ending best fits the narrative of Silent Hill 2, offering a tragic but fitting resolution. James finds closure through death, confronting his grief and guilt in a way that aligns with the game’s somber tone. It’s not a happy ending, but it feels true to the story, providing a sense of resolution without the optimism of other conclusions.
