The HoloX Meeting manga’s first volume focused on introducing the Hololive Vtubers, as it gave Laplus Darknesss, Hakui Koyori, Kazama Iroha, Sakamata Chloe, Takane Lui dedicated chapters. It allowed us to get comfortable with these versions of them and know them based on “lore,” in the event they’re new to us. We learned about their organization’s goal. We maybe even started to root for them. Now in the second volume, we get to see a pay-off and appreciate them more as a whole as they work toward achieving their dream of success.
Editor’s Note: There are minor spoilers for volume 2 of the HoloX Meeting Hololive manga below.
As I mentioned before, the first volume of HoloX Meeting was more about establishing each of the Hololive Vtubers’ characteristics and roles in the “world domination organization,” rather than actually making progress. Yes, some ideas did come up and the group made strides to take over. But it was more about seeing everyone through newcomer Chloe’s eyes than anything else. It wasn’t until the very end that we saw them enter a singing contest to build themselves up. The introduction for volume 2, appropriately enough, shows it not going exactly as planned!
So what do they do? Well, HoloX leader Laplus decides to “fight back.” Because these unknown individuals won, they ended up getting a lot of criticism online. She abhors the thought that people don’t recognize her associates/friends’ talents, so… they put on another show. This time, it’s to prove that yes, they are that talented. Yes, they deserve the attention and success. And… it works.
Which means we get to enjoy some really fun antics for the rest of the HoloX Meeting volume, because now it can focus on the five Hololive Vtubers in fun situations. There are still times when one character will be the focus. For example, Iroha is the point person for the maid cafe “episode.” But because the initial volume got over the introductory elements, we can now enjoy seeing personalities play off of each other and how they handle certain situations. Also, because they are suddenly a success and popular, there is that freedom to depict silly situations and have them make sense.
This all leads into a fun original story and an interesting omake section. Because the actions throughout this volume lead to them being discovered. And because this series ends with that recruitment, we get to actually acknowledge their Vtuber personas beyond the backstory and lore-related elements here. I really appreciated the interviews with the actual performers especially, as it’s a fun way to cap things off and close them out.
The HoloX Meeting manga really turned out to be a fun setup for these five Hololive Vtubers. It tells their origin story in an engaging way. We get to see how well the personalities and established background really lend themselves to a comedic, slice-of-life tale. Plus, once it closes out, there are those additional ties to the performers both in the way this story ends and the bonus content that allowed them to “speak up.”
Both volume 1 and 2 of the HoloX Meeting manga are available outside Japan via Yen Press, and the Hololive Vtubers Laplus Darknesss, Hakui Koyori, Kazama Iroha, Sakamata Chloe, Takane Lui are all active and streaming on YouTube.
