Best Mounts in World of Warcraft

Geosynchronous World Spinner

In a world dominated by magic and supernatural forces, it can be difficult to separate yourself from the crowd. Everyone has a world-ending arsenal, a tragic backstory, or happens to be the cousin of the Warchief’s uncle’s favorite innkeeper on their mother’s side. When it comes to standing out, there’s nothing quite like going against the grain. Rebuke the very notion of taming and riding one of Azeroth’s majestic creatures. Straddle a giant rocket. The Geosynchronous World Spinner isn’t glamorous, but it’s definitely hard to miss! The checkered pattern and three-pronged fin are incredibly garish to look at, and you’ll never stop noticing how the exhaust pipes at the front resemble two nostrils with hair sticking out of them.

The Spinner is a fantastic disruptor in a line-up of thematically appropriate mounts. Good luck obtaining it though. In order to get your hands on one, you’ll need a properly specialized Engineer(or be one yourself) who has the recipe, a boatload of materials, and a hefty sum of gold to foot the bill. The whole process will most likely take several days, but once you’ve got the keys in the ignition, it’ll all be worth it. Maybe.

Ratstallion

Most mounts in World of Warcraft feature ornate armor that produces a sense of superiority. In other cases, mounts can be unorthodox, highlighting the vast differences between lands the player can travel to. Having a mount that showcases your seasoned travels is all well and good, but what if you were more interested in saying something poignant? Your mount could be a wake-up call to adventurers out there who need to be humbled. A reminder that at the end of the day, we’re all just rats in the maze. Introducing Ratstallion, a giant rodent you can find in Dalaran’s Underbelly. Ratstallion has no distinguishing features, but this too is part of the message you send out to the world when riding it. No frills, no special armor, and no grandstanding. It’s just a giant rat. This sewer-ridden thing is a symbol of hard work and being modest about it.

What isn’t modest is the amount of work you have to do to receive it. Ratstallion is unlocked by completing the “Underbelly Tycoon” achievement. This requires you to loot 20,000 Sightless Eyes from the Dalaran Underbelly, a task best suited to individuals who aren’t phased by mindlessly farming enemies for a couple of days. It’s important to note that you automatically receive Ratstallion in the mail as a reward for completing the achievement. You also don’t need to save up the Sightless Eyes; the achievement tracks the total you’ve collected. Feel free to spend them however you see fit. Protip: buy a Wild Mana Wand to increase the number of eyes you can collect from boss enemies in the Underbelly.

Tomb Stalker

It’s common knowledge that Azeroth is home to many strange and unexpected creatures, dinosaurs included. However, the raptor or pterrodax mounts you can collect in World of Warcraft largely fit the same mold. There’s nothing wrong with palette swaps or spectral skins of your favorite reptiles, but the discerning customer is bound to want more. Something that says, “why yes, I am a fan of critically-acclaimed, cinematic masterpiece Jurassic Park. How could you tell?” What better way to show your love for fossils both innate and reanimated than with a mummified dinosaur? For a unique-looking raptor mount with decorative appeal, look no further than the Tomb Stalker. Adorned in bone and stone, the Tomb Stalker has a highly-detailed but rugged look. The saddle is shaped to resemble an ancient throne, making you feel like the king of the dinosaurs.

As is the trend with uniquely shaped mounts in World of Warcraft, excavating the Tomb Stalker is going to take some intense effort. It’s a 1% drop from the final boss of the King’s Rest mythic dungeon. “Mythic” is the important word here; you can only run through mythic dungeons once before having to wait a whole week to run it again. This is what makes the Tomb Stalker one of the most coveted mounts in World of Warcraft. Still, if you’re one of the lucky few who’ve managed to get their hands on it, you can parade it around like the trophy you well deserve.

Invincible

No list of World of Warcraft’s best mounts would be complete without mentioning Invincible, the infamous steed of Arthas Menethil, the Lich King. Invincible is notorious for eluding the grasp of many players. The less than 1% drop rate from The Lich King himself is enough to make most people give up on ever having it. Riding this mount around isn’t about showing it off or displaying your hard work for all to see. If you own Invincible, it’s your civic duty to use it. You need to ride this horse, because otherwise no one would know it was real. It’s a cryptid most will only ever know about through urban legend. If you can handle such pressure, perhaps you’re ready for the weeks it will take for this mount to drop for you.

There are plenty of other terrific mounts to unlock in World of Warcraft. These are just a few that stand out. At the end of the day, almost every mount functions the same way, so there’s no rush to find the rarer ones. If you’re looking for something to do, however, keep these in mind for a rainy day. In-between runs of Icecrown Citadel, why not unlock the Earthen race in World of Warcraft The War Within?

World of Warcraft, and The War Within expansion, are available for PC.
