How to Start Fishing in Metaphor: ReFantazio

In Metaphor: ReFantazio, you’ll hear about getting to go fishing for your own fish way before it actually happens. In fact, you’ll even be able to buy bait! But it’s only once you’re established and recruited a certain ally that it becomes an option.

How and when can I start fishing in Metaphor: ReFantazio?

You won’t get to start fishing in Metaphor: ReFantazio until both Heismay is an ally and you head to Virga Island as part of the story. This comes up on August 14th in game. There will be a bit of in-game text acting as a tutorial letting you know that you can start. From there, you need to head up onto the deck where Heismay is fishing and join him.

There will be some Fishing Rods in a pot on the deck. Interact with them to check them and start trying to catch a fish. Heismay will then ask you for some bait, so make sure you procured some before this point. From there, you might see some text asking how you’ll react to certain events. In my case, Heismay said nothing was biting, and I needed to choose the “give it a waggle” option to end up catching two limp goldfish. Said fish you catch can be used for cooking in the Runner’s kitchen.

Here are some screenshots I took showing where to go and how it all works:

How do I get bait for fishing in Metaphor: ReFantazio?

There are two really easy ways of getting bait pretty early on in Metaphor: ReFantazio. The first is in Martira. The Bug-Selling Boy in town will sell Worm Bait for 100 reeve and Grasshopper Bait for 250 reeve.

The other way to easily get some bait is to grow seeds in the Runner. After you do, you’ll always get a Tail Bait .

Metaphor: ReFantazio is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. There is also a demo available.
