The Best Mercenary Companion Combinations in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred has a new Mercenaries feature allowing players to hire companions that will accompany them on their adventure. In addition to your main mercenary hire, you can also enlist a second mercenary as a Reinforcement. Reinforcements can only use a single skill, but you can assign that skill to activate under the context of using your own skills or when battle conditions are met. With four mercenaries to choose from, some combinations are better than others. Here are the best mercenary companion combinations in Diablo 4.

Varyana / Aldkin Reinforcement

Pairing the two most aggressive mercenaries together gives way to dealing explosive damage to enemies. Varyana’s bleed damage synergizes well with Aldkin’s damage over time abilities, especially “Haunt” which will latch onto new enemies if you can clear the room fast enough. Aldkin’s “Field of Languish” slows enemies to give Varyana an easy target for her “Whirlwind” and “Cleave” skills. In general, Aldkin’s “Wave of Flame” is a great skill to have at the ready. Its secondary ability- being able to dismiss small missile attacks- is excellent utility. Keep in mind: saving it for the right moment means mapping it to a specific skill. Which means if you always want it ready, you’ll have to hold off on using said skill, but the benefit is too good to pass up. For an in-your-face duo focused on dispatching enemies as fast as possible, you can’t go wrong using these two together.

Subo / Raheir Reinforcement

For a complete lockdown of the battlefield, Raheir and Subo have you covered. Raheir’s constant barrage of enemy displacements and stuns get along splendidly with Subo’s traps. “Shield Charge” and “Crater” can move enemies into “Trip Mines” and “Wire Trap.” Raheir’s taunts can consolidate enemies into Subo’s “Cover Fire” or pull in bigger enemies to stack “Explosive Charge” onto them. “Bastion” is a great reaction skill to have activated when affected by control impairment effects. “Provoke” is excellent when assigned to skills that place you in melee range of lots of enemies.

This combination works in reverse as well, but Raheir’s skills are better when they’re saved for certain conditions. You want Subo to use his abilities as often as possible, and have Raheir come in to throw enemies into them when appropriate. This pairing is for controlled playstyles where enemy placement is important for your own set of skills.

These are the best mercenary companion combinations in Diablo 4 overall, but different combinations may better suit your builds or purposes. All the mercenaries work well together regardless of the choice you make- these are simply some of the stronger pairings. Choosing whether to hire a mercenary or enlist them as a reinforcement depends on what skills you want to take advantage of. Before you can utilize the full extent of your mercenaries, you’ll need to raise your rapport with them. One way to do it is running through the Undercity.
