The Undercity is a new feature introduced in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred providing more challenges and greater rewards to players looking to kit themselves out for end-game content. Venture into the Undercity’s multiple districts, fight brand new bosses, and be rewarded based on your overall performance! However, players won’t have access to the Undercity right away. Keep reading to learn how to unlock the Undercity in Diablo 4, and for a brief rundown on how it works.
To unlock the Undercity, you’ll have to make enough progress through Vessel of Hatred’s campaign first. After completing “Fundament of Faith,” speak again to Ormus, who will tell you about the Undercity and assign you a priority quest. The next few steps in this quest chain will take you through the Undercity’s various districts, put you up against their bosses, and introduce you to Undercity mechanics. After you’ve journeyed into the Undercity a third time for the quest, you’ll be able to complete the priority quest chain and unlock the feature proper.
How to Use the Undercity in Diablo 4
The Undercity is a timed dungeon with procedurally-generated floors that rewards you based on how thorough you are at clearing it. Defeating enemies and lighting beacons earns you Attunement. The more attunement you accrue, the greater your rewards will be for clearing the dungeon, but you have a limited amount of time to traverse the entire district. You can extend the timer by beating specific enemies and objects marked with an orange icon on your minimap. Don’t worry about saving enough time to fight the boss; once you reach the boss floor, the timer vanishes, giving you as much time as you need to defeat them.
To access the Undercity, use the Spirit Brazier southeast of the Kurast Bazaar waypoint (there should be an icon on your minimap denoting where it is.) Click ‘Open Portal’ and the portal that opens nearby will take you to a randomly selected Undercity district.
There currently isn’t a way to choose your preferred district, but you can augment your Undercity experience by using Tributes and Bargains. To learn more about those, check out How to Use Tributes in Diablo 4. The Undercity is one way to level up in Diablo 4, but it might not be the fastest.
