The Lunar JRPG series from Game Arts was, sadly, too short-lived with only two main games in existence. Fortunately, there have been many ports, remasters, and the like over the years to make these games more available in different places with improvements and changes. Based on these improvements, here are the best ways to play the Lunar JRPGs.
Best Ways to Play Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
The first game in the series released originally for the Sega CD console add-on for the Genesis, which isn’t exactly the most popular device in Sega’s history. When it comes to the older platforms, my personal preference is the PS1 version. This is also available for some of the older PlayStation systems like the PS3, PSP, and Vita.
However, if you want the game to have better visuals, I suggest playing the mobile version on Android or iOS. This is actually how I checked out these games for the first time. That said, the overall best way to play both Lunar games will be in the Lunar Remastered Collection, which comes out in Spring 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Best Ways to Play Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
The only sequel in this series, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, came out originally for the Sega CD as well in 1994. Again, this is a version I don’t necessarily recommend. Similar to the first game, the best nostalgic way to play this title is to check out the PS1 version, which first came out in the West in 2000. It is available on PS3, PSP, and Vita through backwards compatibility.
Unfortunately, there is no mobile remaster of this sequel you can play right now. In general, it is much harder to play this game than the original. As such, I highly recommend waiting for the Lunar Remastered Collection for this one. This is simply the best overall way to play both of these games. The collection has the sharpest visuals, quality-of-life improvements, and even portable play through systems like Switch and Steam Deck.
Lunar Remastered Collection will release for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in Spring 2025.
