Sony revealed its newest PS5 Pro console variant during the PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation on September 10, 2024. The release date is November 7, 2024, and this model will cost $699.99/£699.99 GBP/€799.99/¥119,980.
The PS5 Pro will not include a disc drive. Sony will sell one as an additional peripheral to go with it. In addition the vertical stand will be sold separately as well.
Mark Cerny, the PS5 Head Architect, emphasized a desire to to bridge the divide between the Performance and Fidelity modes of the original version of the PlayStation 5 in the PS5 Pro. During the showcase, he stated one of the goals of this new variant is to deliver Fidelity Mode graphics at Performance Mode frame rates. The big three components, according to Cerny, are a larger GPU, enhanced ray tracing, and machine learning AI upscaling with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.
The GPU in the PS5 Pro will be larger than the one in the standard PS5. Its RAM will be about 28% faster. As a result, there will be up to 45% faster rendering. Enhanced frame rates of up to 120 fps will also be available on select PlayStation 5 games enhanced for this variant. It will have a 2TB hard drive as well. The ray tracing upgrades will allegedly be double or triple the speed of PlayStation 5 calculations, while the PSSR AI upscaling technology will analyze frame by frame each pixel to fill in detail, similar to technology used in things like the Moguri mod for Final Fantasy IX on PCs.
