Baldur’s Gate 3 has changed how the incredibly challenging Honour Mode works in Patch 7. Since this could be the final major content addition patch for the beloved RPG, now is the time to hop into this special version. Here’s how a custom Honour Mode playthrough works in Baldur’s Gate 3 and how to start it.
How Honour Mode Works
Honour Mode is essentially the hardest possible playthrough you can do of this RPG. Think of it like the ultimate hard mode since it functions a bit differently than other playthroughs. For one, you can’t “save scum” rolls or decisions, which means reloading to change your rolls. Everything that happens is permanent, from battle to dialogue choices.
Perhaps even more important than that, this mode also changes how every single boss fight works. These boss fights are basically their ultimate versions with new skills and strategies. Even if you’ve played through the game multiple times, these fights will feel completely different now.
How to Start a Custom Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3
If the intense stress and challenge of Honour Mode sounds good to you, you can start Honour Mode in the main menu of Baldur’s Gate 3. You have two main options: pick the default Honour Mode or do a custom game. The former doesn’t really allow you to change any of the settings for it.
However, if you pick custom, you can tweak some details to make your own “hard mode.” For instance, you can force yourself to play with a single save file. You can even make your custom mode harder than usual by hiding enemy HP so you have no idea how much progress you have in battles. Another great option for custom modes is to disable or enable multiclassing. If you think being able to mix classes together makes it too easy, then feel free to turn this off.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available right now for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
