Best Core Keeper Background Options

The background for your character in Core Keeper is one of the most important parts of starting a new game. The background is essentially like your character’s starting class, as it determines a few different initial traits and even items. Here are the best Core Keeper background options for those unsure of what to pick.

Best Core Keeper Background: Explorer

Explorer is the background for players that want the right set of items and perks to jumpstart their experience. I highly recommend this one to beginners. Here is what comes with the Explorer background:

  • +3 Running skill
  • 1 Small Lantern
  • 3 Food Rations

Immediately, you are faster than other players and you have food to survive with. In addition, the Small Lantern is a huge blessing in these dark cavernous locations. You don’t have to worry about making a torch first thing.

Gardener

This background gives the player a seasoned farmer history. Here are the starting perks Gardener players have:

  • +3 Gardening skill
  • 1 Copper Hoe
  • 1 Watering Can

This is the right background for players who want the more Stardew Valley side of Core Keeper. Anyone can farm in this game but you are fully capable of doing so right from the onset of the world. Other players will likely have to put in a fair bit of time to unlock this feature. Gardening is also massively important since food is often scarce.

Warlock

There are quite a few combat-focused backgrounds but my personal favorite is the Warlock class. This makes you able to summon dark minions to besiege and bewilder foes. You get the following starting three perks with this background:

  • +3 Summoning skill
  • 1 Tome of the Dark
  • 3 Food Rations

This is a pretty advanced starting background but it is so valuable. Summoning and the Tome of the Dark are later features that many players won’t have access to for hours. Being able to summon minions for combat will make your life a whole lot easier, plus a little less lonely if you’re playing solo.

Core Keeper 1.0 is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It will also release for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One on September 17, 2024.
