How to Upgrade Your Ship in Cat Quest 3

Your ship is a major part of Cat Quest 3, and just like your equipment, you can upgrade it to improve its abilities. However, the way to do this is less obvious than your other equipment and will require some extra work to achieve.

How to Unlock New Upgrade Slots for Your Ship

While your weapons, armor and spells can be upgraded at shops in Purvanna, there is no shipyard equivalent. However, the ship section of the menu contains a number of equipment slots of its own. However, at the start of the game, most of these slots are locked off.

To unlock more upgrade slots, the solution is simple. You play through the game and as you level up, more slots will unlock here. Your ship will also level up along with you, with its stats increasing naturally. However, these boosts aren’t huge and you’ll need to equip some upgrades to get the most out of your ship.

How to Find Ship Upgrades in Cat Quest 3

There are two types of upgrade available for your ship in Cat Quest 3. The first is different special ammo types, which are generally found by taking down large ships around the world. For instance, the Meowtallica ship that can be found on the southern coast of Purvanna will reward you with the Electric Cannonpaw if you can defeat it. However, these might take a while to unlock as they are high-level encounters.

The second type of ship upgrade is blueprints. These can be found by completing various ship-based challenges around the world. As a general rule, if solving a puzzle requires you to use your ship to blast open a barrier or travel across large waters, your reward will usually be a ship blueprint. For example, there is a fort at the northern part of Purvanna which can only be accessed by steering your ship through the small rivers nearby and blasting the entrance with a cannon. Defeating all the enemies here will grant you an Ammo Capacity upgrade, allowing to fire a second special shot.

To equip these, go to the ship section of the menu and select the upgrades you would like. Bear in mind that the special ammo and blueprints occupy the same slots, so you’ll need to decide if you want stat improvement or different ammo types, depending on how many slots are available.

Due to the limited number of slots, you need to make some tough choices about how to upgrade your ship in Cat Quest 3. While the special ammo types are nice, I’d recommend equipping one only when you have a free slot going. The most important ship upgrade is your Ship Hull, as you’ll be encountering plenty of dangers out on the high seas and being resistant to threats will keep you alive longer.

After this, either a special ammo type or Cannon Power, as the next step is dealing damage in return. Both of these will upgrade your fire power in some capacity, although special ammo is limited and can only be recharged by using your regular cannon.

Firing Rate is also useful after this. Cannons rarely feel slow in Cat Quest 3, but giving the fire rate a boost is a decent upgrade as you face larger enemies.

Cat Quest 3 is out now for PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
