Should you “accompany them to the capital” or “make your own way” in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

After you wake up in Melve, a soldier named Gregor will ask the main character to go with him to the Capital to prove they are the “true Arisen.” Once you’ve cleaned up any lingering side quests, you progress the main story by talking to Gregor and agreeing to travel to Vernworth. During this segment of the game, you will get jumped by a giant creature. However, after defeating the boss fight, you will get your first story choice in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Gregor will then ask you if you want to ride the oxcart with him to Vernworth and will give you a choice between: “accompany them to the capital” or “make your own way to the capital.” So which one should you choose? Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. The main difference is that choosing to “accompany Gregor” to the Capital will allow you to “fast travel” instantly to Vernworth. However, you will miss out on a few things if you do this, which we’ll explain below.

What happens if you Ride the Oxcart in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Choosing to “accompany them to the capital” is basically the game’s way of introducing fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Once you hop on the back of the oxcart, you can choose to “sit” on the bench and ride it all the way to Vernworth. However, pressing the “Triangle” (PlayStation) or “Y” (Xbox) will allow the player to “doze off.” This essentially warps you instantly to the location without having to wait any further.

However, by doing this, you are missing a section of the early-game map that you might end up wanting to go back and explore later on. That said, if you don’t feel like walking a lengthy distance to the Capital, then choosing to ride the Oxcart is a no-brainer. Plus, some players might not be happy with the Vocation they chose at the beginning of the game and don’t want to spend another hour fighting enemies until they change their job class.

What happens if you Walk on Foot to the Capital in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Choosing to “make your own way to the Capital” has a couple of benefits. For starters, you get to grind a little extra XP by taking on groups of enemies you would have missed had you chosen to ride the Oxcart. More importantly, there are a handful of “Golden Trove Beetles” on the path leading to the Capital.

Picking these insects off trees and “consuming them” will permanently increase your carrying capacity in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Walking on foot to the Capital is also just a good way to get better acquainted with your Vocation’s gameplay. The only downside is choosing this option might “slow” the game’s story down a little bit. But it certainly has a lot of perks that make up for that.

Should you ride the cart to the Capital in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

To circle back to the original question, I personally think you should ride the oxcart and accompany Gregor to the Capital in Dragon’s Dogma 2. My main reasoning behind this is that your Vocation is fairly limited until you reach Vernworth. So, even if you level up by walking on foot, you can’t unlock any new skills until you visit the Vocation Guild in the city.

Your character’s Vocation shifts dramatically after you reach levels 2 through 4, as you get some pretty big upgrades in your moveset. While you are missing out on Golden Trove Beetles and experience points, these gains are pretty minimal once you really get deep into the game’s story. Still, walking on foot is also not a bad option by any means. If you want to experience everything the game has to offer, then don’t ride the oxcart. Just expect to take a 10 to 15-minute walk to Vernwroth.
