Should You Pick Govil or Bertrand in Unicorn Overlord’s ‘To Resist or to Yield’

The Unicorn Overlord Side Quest “To Resist or to Yield” is one that requires players to pick if they will side with Govil, Bertrand, or pick a third option. As the choice determines who joins the party, it comes down to who or how many characters you want to eventually get.

Should I pick Govil or Bertrand in the Unicorn Overlord “To Resist or to Yield” Side Quest?

You can first happen upon this Side Quest after getting past and reclaiming the Fortified City of Solvaquad in Bastorias. Immediately heading west through the gates triggers a story sequence with Govil. He’ll show you his wounded people who were attacked by Zenoira, then complain about Bertrand’s inaction resulting in too many casualties. He wants help taking the Werebear out.

After talking with him, Alain will talk with Morard and Yunifi about the situation. You can side with Govil immediately, but you’ll also be directed to head to Bertrand’s northern fortress and hear the other side of the story.

If you do, you’ll learn there are many civilians counting on the bear bestral, and he asks for help shutting down Govil’s rebellion. Again, Alain will talk to Morard and Yunifi. You can side with Bertrand here, but Alain will also come up with a third option. This involves setting up camp in the middle and hatching a plot to face both sides.

So my recommendation is to go with the third option. I marked all three on the map below, so you can tell which spot to head to for each option.

No matter which option you choose, “To Resist or to Yield” is an enemy level 29 fight in Unicorn Overlord. If you side with Bertrand, you have him as an ally, while choosing Govil means he’s by your side.

How do I recruit Bertrand and Govil in Unicorn Overlord?

Okay, so we’re going with the middle option in the center of the map. You’ll be facing Werebears and Werewolves, and there will be Werefoxes and Wereowls too. You’ll be in the middle facing enemies on all sides. You need to reach and beat both Bertrand and Govil to recruit them in Unicorn Overlord. You also need to keep your own base from being captured.

I know I really support flying units a lot in the game, and I’m going to suggest pinning your hopes on them once more. You start with five Valor points. Send two units with flying leaders north to Bertrand, then two flying units south to face Govil. Save that fifth Valor point for a Hastened Call from Fran or Celeste. Your two forces will encounter enough enemies on the way to get another Valor point or two to set up defenses in the center at your base. Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about night falling and all the bestrals getting that boost.

There are a lot of units, so have healing potions and stamina restoring foods ready. I defeated 27 enemies by the time I was done, and that was with skipping some. Bertrand will hide his units in the forests as you get close to him, to trigger sneak attacks, while Govil will have his werewolves use the hide ability to “vanish.”

Making it through results in Bertrand and Govil learning from Alain’s lesson and offering to join. Bertrand is a Werebear who arrives with a Steel Axe, Steel Greatshield, and First Aid Kit. Govil is a Werewolf who is only equipped with a Steel Sword when he joins.
