In a game like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a poorly optimized weapon can be the difference between victory or using a Phoenix Down. This guide will explain how to upgrade weapons in FF7 Rebirth.
Upgrade Weapons in FF7 Rebirth Explained
Well, you would think it’s as easy as clicking on “Upgrade Weapons” in your menu, but it actually isn’t. In fact, that menu actually sort of doesn’t do anything, and it’s sort of bizarre why it’s called “Upgrade Weapons”. However, it’s actually easier than even that would be. Weapons in FF7 Rebirth upgrade on their own.
This process is simple and automated, but it can be a little confusing to understand how it’s happening and why. All weapon upgrades in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are tied to an individual character’s Weapon Level. Every character has their own weapon level, which goes up when you collect SP (or Skill Points). This SP is also used on Folios, but Folios actually don’t have anything to do with your weapons.
How to use SP to upgrade weapons in FF7 Rebirth
Everything is done automatically to upgrade your Weapon Level. You don’t need to keep track of it yourself, but if you want to, you can view how much more SP you need and what stat bonuses an individual weapon will get on the next level up. All your weapons will level up together when your weapon level does; it has nothing to do with what you have equipped.
Weapon Upgrades can yield extra materia slots, stat boosts, and new Weapon Skills. These are also poorly named, in my opinion, as they usually act more like perks or passive augments for your currently equipped weapon. A Weapon Skill needs to be set, like materia, anytime you find a new weapon. It’s always worth checking back after a character has leveled up to see if a new skill is ready for you.
Keep in mind that even if you spend SP on Folios, it doesn’t count against you. For example, if you need 40 SP to hit Weapon Level three, have 25 SP and spend it on abilities in your folio you still only need 15 more SP to hit Weapon Level three. All in all, the system is easier than ever, and it takes a lot off your plate. However, learning how to upgrade weapons in FF7 Rebirth can be a bit confusing at first due to the sequel moving to an automated system in comparison to Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is currently available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
