How to Recruit Renault in Unicorn Overlord

After defeating some people in Unicorn Overlord, you get the chance to recruit them, and Renault is someone who falls into that group. However, you need to be a bit patience and go through some additional battles before he will fight by your side.

How do I recruit Renault in Unicorn Overlord?

Editor’s Note: There will be Unicorn Overlord spoilers for the Cornia area in the guide below.

So you’ll see Renault once he abducts Scarlett, and you won’t face him properly again until “The Priestess, Abducted” main quest in Eucuit. Defeating him here sets up a situation like the one with Hodrick, where after the battle is done he will join because Alain’s unicorn ring purified him.

However, that isn’t the case. Upon awakening from the healing, he takes off and disappears. Josef and Hodrick note this is because his honor and morals mean he is too guilty about the actions he committed while brainwashed.

If you head north of Eucuit and continue along the northern coast of Cornia heading west, you’ll encounter a number of small skirmishes. During them, a knight errant named Laurent will often appear and fight alongside you. This is Renault in disguise.

You need to complete the following fights to recruit Renault, aka Laurent, in Unicorn Overlord. I fought them in the following order:

  • “The Battle for Plaine”
  • “The Battle for Rivière”
  • “The Battle for Prashvari”
  • “The Battle for Istania”

For me, because of the progression I was following, Renault completely abandoned his Laurent disguise and joined the Liberation Army after The Battle for Istania in the northwest. But be advised that depending on the order in which you choose the following fights in the north and northwest areas of the region, he may join at a different time for you.

He is a Great Knight who arrives bearing a Bronze Spear and White Rider’s Shield.

Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
