In Unicorn Overlord, a number of battles will end with players being given the option to recruit or execute the enemy characters encountered. Naturally, this may leave you wondering if sparing or killing someone is the “right” answer. In this situation, it pretty much comes down to personal preference.
Should I recruit or execute the characters I encounter in Unicorn Overlord?
Many of the battles in Unicorn Overlord end with an option to bring someone new into the Liberation army. It’s usually a 50/50 shot if that new person is someone you met along the way or is misguided, or if it is an enemy who might be able to be persuaded to abandon Zenoira and join the cause. From what I’ve seen, it all comes down to if you want a new unit in your army.
Since I used screenshots of Auch for this article, I’ll use him as an example. The sidequest he’s tied to also means unlocking access to a fort where you could hire wizards. However, he’s also on the enemy side. Once you defeat him, you have the option to recruit him or execute him. I chose to recruit him. That meant I got a sorcerer to use for free.
Now, if you do choose an execution, that can mean you’ll get other things for it. For example, at one point you’ll need to help the Feathersword Ochlys fight to save Sharon and a church being held by the Black Talon Mandrin. When you win and you’re at the church with him and Ochlys, you can choose to execute him. Doing so gave me the 15 Divine Shards he was holding.
So you may want to make choices based on if you want to increase your army or you want to roleplay as Alain being merciful or more ruthless. Just know that choosing to execute characters in Unicorn Overlord, rather than spare them, could result in missing some conversations and allies.
Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
