Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second in the Remake trilogy, which means it brings back a lot of returning characters. But it has some surprising newer characters as well. You wouldn’t be alone if you are confused by the newish character Glenn Lodbrok in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Who is this strange robed man?
Who is Glenn Lodbrok in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Ever Crisis?
Note: Light spoilers for Rebirth’s story.
Glenn first shows up as a secretive advisor to President Rufus Shinra early in the game’s story. He pops up every once in a while with a few tidbits to say, almost like a puppet master. However, a later part in the story also has him involved in the Wutai side of the war during one particular cutscene. Suffice it to say, he seems like a somewhat bad guy. He is pretty new to this universe, but not completely.
Glenn first showed up in a brief cameo in the battle royale mobile game (which I loved, sadly) before starring in The First Soldier story arc of the ongoing Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis mobile game. If you didn’t play this, you wouldn’t know him. He is a major part of this prequel tale that sheds some light on Sephiroth’s past. He is seen as a hero in this particular mobile game, and he’s a lovable, charming protagonist who is part of SOLDIER in its earliest incarnation.
Glenn butts heads in Sephiroth on a mission 19 years before the events of the original RPG, but that’s about it. We don’t know much about what happens to him until Glenn reappears as a background character in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
What about the FFVII Ever Crisis characters Matt and Lucia?
Matt and Lucia are the two other playable party members of Glenn’s group in The First Soldier. They also go on the SOLDIER mission to Rhadore to scout for a new mako reactor. These two don’t appear directly in FFVII Rebirth like Glenn, but their names are referenced. This happens during the Protorelic mission in Cosmo Canyon. Their names are mentioned in the cutscene, as seen in the image above.
It stands to reason both Matt and Lucia could appear in actual cameos in the third and final game in this trilogy. For now, though, we will have to wait and see.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available right now exclusively for the PS5.
