Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has a vast and gorgeous world to explore across a couple of continents, from Kalm in the east to Cosmo Canyon in the west. However, the division of the different regions means knowing how to fast travel and return to previous regions in FFVII Rebirth is more confusing than it should be at times.
How do I fast travel in FFVII Rebirth?
Fast traveling is one of the easiest features in the game once you wrangle a Chocobo from the particular region you’re visiting. All you need to do is open up the main map by pressing down on the touchpad. Then, you select a major landmark location icon. This could be a town like Kalm, Chocobo farm, or activated Rennawave tower, and you can fast travel to it instantly by pressing X.
It is possible to unlock even more fast travel points by following the little Chocobo that looks like Cloud, who guides you to Chocobo Stops. These look like blue bus stops, and picking up the sign next to one unlocks a new fast travel point and, if you have a cushion, rest stop. Unfortunately, fast travel like this via the map only works for places within the region you’re currently in. If you want to switch to another region and its map, you’ll have to go through a different process for most of the game.
How do I return to past regions in FFVII Rebirth with Johnny and Cid
It is possible to return to past regions in FFVII Rebirth, barring certain temporary story moments and dungeons where the game will warn you about this. There are actually four different ways to do this, each of which has its own quirks. The first is to manually walk travel back to the region you came from, which I don’t necessarily recommend to anyone. For instance, this is like going back through the Mythril Mines to go from Junon back to the Grasslands.
The second option is to speak with certain NPCs. For instance, you eventually unlock the ability to speak with Johnny in Costa del Sol in the Corel Region to fast travel back to the Junon Region.
Once you reach the end of the story in the Gongaga Region, you will unlock the Tiny Bronco with Cid Highwind as its pilot, which gives you a third option. You can pay him 1,000 Gil for first-time locations or 300 Gil for familiar spots if you want to fly to other regions. You just need to visit the local airstrip for that region and interact with the telephone booth there. Thankfully, you can fast travel to the nearest airstrip, so this is a quick and mostly painless way to travel between regions if you have the Gil to spare.
Finally, when you reach the very beginning of Chapter 12, you will unlock the ability to open up the world map (press down on the touchpad and then the Options button) and select any region there. You can then instantly fast travel to any point you have unlocked (barring certain story moments) from anywhere in the world with ease.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available right now exclusively for PS5.
