A rather pleasant surprise came from the Super Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation. Early on, Nintendo revealed that people would only be able to take part in online play with random players. However, Producer Takashi Tezuka noted during the E3 2019 demonstration that friend matching will be added in an update.

During the presentation, while playing through Super Mario Maker 2, Tezuka said that he didn’t know if he was going to talk about multiplayer at E3 2019. However, he then confirmed that and said, “We’re going to be making some changes to the matching with friends.”

Here is a clip of the moment from the Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation. (Thanks, Resetera!)

Super Mario Maker 2 will come to the Nintendo Switch on June 28, 2019.
