The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is going to look a bit different when it launches. After the first trailer was released on April 30, 2019, there was a massive fan outcry concerning the depiction of Sonic in the movie. Now Jeff Fowler, the movie’s director, has made a statement saying Sonic’s character design will be altered for his official appearance.
Fowler made the tweet via his official Twitter account. He acknowledged that people were not happy with how Sonic looks in the movie. As a result, there will be a Sonic the Hedgehog movie redesign to make sure he looks his best.
Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast

This announcement comes after multiple artists online began sharing renditions of what changes could be made to adjust the movie version of Sonic’s appearance to make him look more like the video game, cartoon, and comic versions of the characters. One of the designs getting the most attention is by Aimée Cavalcante, who took a shot from the movie and painted over it to create an interpretation of the character that blends elements from his more iconic portrayals with the movie’s version of the character.
