Last week, Japan got the next big title to hit the market after Monster Hunter: World with Dragon Ball FighterZ which blasted off with a solid debut. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Switch was another new release. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of January 29 through February 4, 2018.
Monster Hunter: World kept its crown with a whopping 346,187 units sold in its second week, putting it at 1,591,356 units sold in Japan in retail alone. It continues to stay on track to become the best-selling Monster Hunter game. It should be interesting to see how it continues performing in the weeks to come.
At #2 we have the newcomer Dragon Ball FighterZ with 68,731 units sold on the PlayStation 4. Bandai Namco recently announced that Dragon Ball FighterZ was the fastest Dragon Ball game to ship out 2 million, and so far its Japanese debut is the highest we’ve seen in a Dragon Ball console game in recent history. To give you a comparison, Dragon Ball Xenoverse debuted with 34,690 units sold on PS4 in February 2015. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 debuted with 66,035 units sold on PS4 in November 2016.
Splatoon 2 charted at #3, once again, with 25,758 units sold, making it the top Switch title of the week. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle followed at #4 with 21,279 units sold on Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey followed at #5 with 21,263 units and #6 with 15,978 units sold respectively for Switch.
The only other new title in the top-20 is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which debuted with at #7 with 13,922 units sold on the Nintendo Switch, a bit on the lower end of the recent Switch port titles.
On the hardware end of things, the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console with 86,174 units sold in the week. The PS4 Pro sold 23,113 units, which puts the PS4 family at 109,287 units sold, thanks to the back-to-back blockbuster releases in Monster Hunter: World and Dragon Ball FighterZ. As for the Nintendo Switch, it continues seeing solid sales with 49,165 units sold in the week, which puts it at 3,634,147 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 2017, going by Media Create’s figures.
