Last week, Japan had a tremendous week in sales with the release of Super Mario Odyssey, along with Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, the latest Taiko no Tatsujin, and more. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest software and hardware sales data from the week of October 23 through October 29, 2017.
The #1 spot of the week goes to none other than Super Mario Odyssey, which debuted with a whopping 462,038 units in its first week of sales for the Nintendo Switch.
Here’s a graph comparing its debut with the opening of previous 3D Mario games in Japan:
- (2007) Super Mario Galaxy – 250,585 [Wii]
- (2010) Super Mario Galaxy 2 – 339,901 [Wii]
- (2011) Super Mario 3D Land – 343,492 [3DS]
- (2013) Super Mario 3D World – 99,588 [Wii U]
- (2017) Super Mario Odyssey – 462,038 [Switch]
Not only did it top the charts of the best-selling debut for any 3D Mario game, but it helped the Nintendo Switch sell a massive 126,701 units in the week. Going by Media Create’s numbers, it helped the Switch reach the 2 million milestone sooner than expected, as it now sits at 2,019,983 units sold since its debut back in March 2017.
The next entry of the week goes to ARK: Survival Evolved, which debuted at #2 with 70,177 units sold on the PS4, much more than what most of us expected.
#3 is another big title with Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, the updated port of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and it charted at #3 with 60,848 units sold in its debut for 3DS.
Here’s a look at another chart showing how it stacks against other Shin Megami Tensei remasters and their debuts in Japan:
- (2011) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked – 20,809 [3DS]
- (2012) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers – 69,365 [3DS]
- (2015) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker – 53,264 [3DS]
- (2017) Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux – 60,858 [3DS]

Moving on, we have Assassin’s Creed: Origins at #4 with 49,419 units sold on PlayStation 4. This is actually a big increase from its previous major Japanese release in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate that debuted with 32,078 units on PS4 back in November 2015.
At #5 we have Taiko no Tatsujin: Session de Dodon ga Don! for PS4, the first Taiko Drum Master game on a PlayStation home console since the very first entry back in September 2004 on PS2. It sold 28,245 units in its first week.
Other new titles of the week includes Idol Time PriPara: Ume All-Star Live! which charted at #8 with 14,885 units sold on the 3DS, 12-Sai. Torokeru Puzzle: Futari no Harmony at #14 with 6,195 units sold on 3DS, and Rune Factory 4 (Platinum Collection) at #19 with 3,567 units sold on the 3DS.
As far as hardware sales go, we already mentioned that the Switch is now at 2,019,983 units sold in Japan going by Media Create’s numbers. Nintendo recently announced that the Switch shipped 7.63 units worldwide as of September 30, so if we go by those numbers that means 26.47% of all Switches out there comes from Japan. PlayStation 4 sales went back to lower numbers after a strong Gran Turismo Sport launch week the week prior.
