This morning, Nintendo of Europe sent out their usual press release outlining this week’s Nintendo eShop update. Among the list of titles headed to the eShop this week is Squids Odyssey—and it’s a cross-platform purchase that you can buy once and play on both the 3DS and Wii U.

Squids Odyssey is an indie RPG where you control a squad of squids to free their homeland from a black ooze that is mysteriously mutating the sea life. Squids come in for types—shooters, troopers, scouts and healers—and you can fling them across the battlefield.

Nintendo of Europe say that, if you purchase Squids Odyssey on the Nintendo 3DS, you’ll be able to download the Wii U version of the game for free, provided the two devices are linked using the same Nintendo Network ID. Squids Odyssey costs €12.99/£9.99.

Cross-platform purchases are common on iPhone and Android devices, as well as in the case of certain PlayStation games. Nintendo have discussed the idea of incorporating cross-platform purchases on 3DS and Wii U, but have not officially announced just when this functionality will be introduced. We suspect Squids Odyssey is a special case, and we’re following up to try and find out.
