Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian designer, Fumito Ueda, has left the employ of Sony, according to a rumour reported by Eurogamer, who say that the veteran designer is working on The Last Guardian for PlayStation 3 in a freelance capacity.

Ueda’s departure from Sony’s Team Ico studio is allegedly the reason for The Last Guardian’s lengthy development period, which was first revealed in a 2007 issue of Japan’s Famitsu magazine. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 3 sometime in 2012.

When contacted for verification, Sony told Eurogamer they do not comment on rumour and speculation.
