BurgerTime HD Is Not A Simple Remake Of BurgerTime With HD Graphics

I got a chance to try BurgerTime HD, a title we outed earlier this week, during Game Developer’s Conference. I thought I would see arcade BurgerTime with HD graphics, but that’s not the game I played.

First, BurgerTime HD is a 2.5D game instead of a 2D game with high resolution sprites. Second, hamburger chefs run in a cylinder instead of a flat world. MonkeyPaw Games also added a multiplayer mode that supports up to four players.

BurgerTime HD is a race to run over beef patties, cheese, and buns. Drop a layer down by walking over it for 100 points. Complete a burger to earn 600 points. The trick is another player can steal your burger by running over the bun before you can get to it. While you’re building a burger, enemies like apples roll around on the level. You can stun them with pepper, but its best to jump over them. Levels are loaded with ladders and moving platforms to help players dash to the top.

The build I played had 10 burger levels and five race stages. Race stages are what they sound like, a multiplayer race to build burgers. I played one level with rocket packs to grab. Once you pickup this power up you can soar straight up for a limited amount of time. Some of the rocket power ups were in mid-air, so you had to grab one and use it before you fall to far to move forward. Remember the falling spike drops from Mega Man? BurgerTime HD has those too, but spikes won’t kill your chef. You just get sent back to start.

MonkeyPaw settled on developing BurgerTime HD because John Greiner, President, discovered BurgerTime was Hudson’s top selling mobile phone title. The arcade classic outsold fan favorite caveman Bonk during Greiner’s time at Hudson.
