The Nintendo 3DS area at E3 was packed with proof of concept movies and the most impressive one was Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D – The Naked Sample.
Konami took scenes from the PlayStation 2 game and applied the Nintendo 3DS magic to them. This wasn’t a playable game, but you could control the camera with the slide pad. Changing the perspective would make different objects pop out of the background. A tree’s branches, for example, would leap out of the screen if you rotated at the right example.
In another scene, Snake dodges falling rocks which jump out at the viewer. Other neat 3D effects were a waving crocodile’s tail and floating 3D leaves.
My favorite scene from The Naked Sample was when a masked soldier dropped his cigarettes. The operative reached into the trees and towards the screen to grab them. A hand reached out and dirt stuck to the screen. Snake snuck under the guard, grabbed the smokes, and put them in the soldier’s hand.
While it was only a video with camera control, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D – The Naked Sample was simply amazing.
