Disregard the January 5th release date for Retro Game Challenge in Nintendo’s DS line up. XSEED sent us an e-mail stating Retro Game Challenge is set for February 2009. Most of the games in Retro Game Challenge need no explanation since the mock games are based on Famicom archetypes. Anyone that played video games in the 80s should be able to jump into Retro Game Challenge.
So, what’s taking so long? Retro Game Challenge has an unusual amount of text for a mock video game compilation.
Each “game” in Retro Game Challenge has a virtual instruction manual which XSEED is translating.
Also Retro Game Challenge has a library of fictional GameFan magazines which contain “previews”, tips, and cheats. Instead of directly translating the magazines and having references to Japanese video game culture that fly over our heads XSEED is localizing them. The US version has a Western touch with references like “Dan Sock” and quotes from the Wizard. This is the part of Retro Game Challenge I’m most interested to see since XSEED has to pretty much rewrite the Gamefan content to make it more relevant for gamers outside of Japan.
