Root Letter, Kadokawa Games’ mystery visual novel, is getting a Hollywood film adaptation in collaboration with Akatsuki Entertainment USA. [Thanks, Bahamut!]

The story in the original game revolves around the protagonist arriving in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, in order to search for Fumino Aya, a missing friend. After finding a letter addressed to him that was never sent out, the protagonist must need to find out what happened to Aya, with multiple endings present depending on the player’s choices.

Kadokawa Games president Yoshimi Yasuda talked about how he was really happy to hear that the film would be adapted by Hollywood. He hopes that this film will be an opportunity to contribute to his hometown, and the Shimane prefecture government and locals who helped during the development of Root Letter.

Akatsuki Entertainment head Annmarie Sairrino Bailey thanked Kadokawa Games for partnering with them, and expressed excitement at the adaptation and the potential in the story. Production is still in its early stages at the moment, and as they are currently working on the script, Bailey asked fans to wait a little longer for more details. However, she did mention that Root Letter’s suspense elements will be adapted to be more realistic. Finally, she hopes they can continue working with Kadokawa Games in the future as well.

Root Letter is available on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, PC, Android, and iOS. Coincidentally, the game is getting a remake on PS4, Vita, and Nintendo Switch called Root Letter: Last Answer that has live-action graphics. Root Letter: Last Answer comes out December 20, 2018.
