The Nintendo Switch was chosen for the following reason:

“The Nintendo Switch, which can change its form to accommodate the play scene, has recorded an explosively large amount of sales since its launch in March 2017, reaching 14 million units sold. The Switch was chosen for diversifying the locations and play styles which one could play games in, and innovating the game experience for worldwide game users.”

Takeshi Natsuno, the special guest who announced the Grand Prize, said in his speech that to release a game console in 2018, a time when most game developers are going into smartphone, is not only a lot of pressure but also a big show of confidence. In this current gaming scene, the Nintendo Switch was able to spread across the world, provide confidence to Japanese developers, surprise the game industry, and move its players. This was why the award was given to the Nintendo Switch.
