The Caligula Effect: Overdose uses the ‘Imaginary Chain’ system, a system where you can foresee the effects of combat (including combos with other characters) before you execute them, with a percentage chance of it occurring as planned shown on the top left. In this game, players can initiate a battle with enemy students with a preliminary strike for an early benefit in battle.

Furthermore, the game has an improved framerate and presentation thanks to Unreal Engine 4. Experience is now shared with every party member, with sub members receiving half the EXP.

The Caligula Effect: Overdose also completely revamps the UI to be more stylish and to present more information, as well as show off character personalities. Using “WIRE”, the main character can chat with his allies, and in this game, depending on the scenario they might even be able to chat with Musicians as well.

The “Causality Link” system, where you could connect with more than 500 students, has also seen a UI upgrade. You still need to know an acquaintance to catch a student’s attention. The students’ quests have all been adjusted slightly to give finer detail to their individuality.

Several elements have been added to make dungeon exploration more fun, such as WIRE conversations that occur when requirements are met, as well as party member combination-specific animations before and after battles.

Some interactions in the story change depending on the gender of the main protagonist. For example, in the above scenario, the protagonist and Mifue need to pretend to be a couple to enter one of the Musician’s dungeons, but reactions to this change depending on whether you chose a male or female protagonist.

The Caligula Effect: Overdose releases in Japan on May 17, 2018 for PlayStation 4.
