Square Enix Holdings shared the latest financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. The report gives us an insight on the company’s forecast of Dragon Quest XI.
According to Square Enix President and Representative Director Yosuke Matsuda, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has generated a “great customer responds and garnered praise for its contents.”
Matsuda notes, “We have seen stronger sales of the PlayStation 4 version than the Nintendo 3DS version, but given the installed base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the Nintendo 3DS version going forward.”
When asked if Square Enix looks likely to reach the target for unit sales of Dragon Quest XI, the company responded with “We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that will depend on how sales of the Nintendo 3DS version trend going forward.”
Last we saw, Dragon Quest XI is selling more on 3DS than its PS4 counterpart, but this means that Square Enix had higher expectations for the portable version. It could be said that Dragon Quest XI released a little bit too late in the life cycle of the 3DS. It’s also worth considering that it banked on the nostalgia factor for older fans on a platform that has a younger user base.
Dragon Quest XI released in Japan on July 29, 2017 for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4. The game is headed to Westward in 2018.
