Sega Sammy released their financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017, and they had a lot of profits to show for, with a big thanks going to Persona 5 and Total War: Warhammer.
Under Entertainment Contents, it was revealed that sales for Phantasy Star Online 2 remained robust for its fourth anniversary and PS4 release last April. As far as Smartphone games go, Hortensia SAGA and PuyoPuyo!! Quest had strong sales.
Packaged games sold 10.28 million units in the fiscal year, an increase over last year’s 9.22 million and this was thanks to the launch of mainstay titles including Total War: Warhammer, the latest entry of the Total War series that is super popular in Europe, and has sold more than 20 million copies in 16 years.
Persona 5, the new installment of the Persona series, also had a strong performance, as you might recall Atlus announcing last month that it shipped out 1.5 million copies worldwide.
KanColle Arcade has continued its favorable performance in the amusement machine field, and helped Sega with amusement sales at 108.5% compared with the previous fiscal year.
In total, Sega’s Entertainment Contents saw a net sales of 205.7 billion yen, or about $1.8 billion USD, in revenue and an 8% increase over the previous fiscal year. The company saw a huge 11.176 billion yen operating income, an increase of 165.1% from the previous fiscal year. Sales from packaged and digital games accounted for almost half of Sega’s total revenue. It’s also worth noting that of the 10.28 million games Sega sold, a little more than half, or 5.24 million units, came from new releases.
