Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo had plenty to share about The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Streel III, in an interview with Dengeki PlayStation. [Thanks, Hachima.]

Here’s a look at some highlights from the interview.

How does the story of Trails of Cold Steel III start out?

Toshihiro Kondo: It takes place about a year and a half after the ending of Trails of Cold Steel II. The protagonist Rean and the others of Class VII have graduated from the military academy and are all walking their own roads. As for Rean, he’ll continue the situation from Trails of Cold Steel II where he’s being used by Osborne, but a new step will mark the beginning of Trails of Cold Steel III for him.

This time, the west of the Empire will be depicted, and we’ll get to fixit the Britannia Island. We’ll also see characters from Trails in the Sky appear from Liberl Kingdom reappear to join your party, and you’ll even meet a certain character from Zero no Kiseki. The mystery behind Rean’s birth will also be revealed in Trails of Cold Steel III.

About battle scenes

Most of the fundamentals won’t change, but the issue of it being a command-based battle system that might be seen as lacking in style has been around since the past. Since it’s  going to be on PS4, there will be more buttons, so after thinking about directly assigning something for each one, we got what we have today. It’s still in the midst of development so it’s still undecided, but we’re aiming to have something intuitive that will allow you to progress through battle just by pressing buttons.

Again, we’re thinking about a way to have battles transition seamlessly from the map. Movement will be the way it was before, but positioning is becoming more of a focus. getting back attacked will get you surrounded, and such, as we stay true to the concept of distance.

We’re also preparing a new special command called “Brave Order.”

About Divine Knight battles

This is still in development. Previously, it was a strong point in event battles, but this time we plan on adding it as one of the game systems. We’re thinking about having several units in battle.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III releases in Japan in Fall 2017 for PlayStation 4.
