Back in 1999, Rare released Jet Force Gemini, a third person shooter, on the Nintendo 64. It was a success, so much so that a Game Boy Color version was commissioned. Bit Studios started work on it, instead of Rare, but the project never came to fruition. A playable prototype version of the game surfaced back in 2010, resulting in some screenshots appearing online, but that was the only footage of the isometric, 2D shooter, until now. The Gameboy Color YouTube channel has a video of the game’s opening.
The Game Boy Color version of Jet Force Gemini begins with Juno and Lupus searching for Juno’s twin sister, Vela. A signal is being broadcast from an unknown planet, so they head in to investigate. Something goes wrong, resulting in a crash landing. The video ends with an image seen in one of the original screenshots released from the 2010 prototype cartridge.
The original Jet Force Gemini was released worldwide on the Nintendo 64, back in 1999. It is also immediately available as part of the Xbox One’s Rare Replay collection.
