On November 4, Super Mario Maker received an update that added Checkpoints, Mario status-dependent power-ups, a more difficult version of Gnat Attack, and Event Courses in Course World. The update added an additional, unannounced feature as well, a new means of earning additional Costume Mario forms.

Previously, there were two ways to unlock Costume Mario options. The first was to scan in an applicable amiibo on the Nintendo Wii U GamePad. This would unlock it for use in the Mystery Mushroom menu. The other was to play through the 100 Mario Challenge. After completing the courses, one random Costume Mario form would be unlocked. The November Super Mario Maker update allows people to earn a costume for completing an Event Course in Course World.

There are two Event Course costumes available. The first is Game Center CX’s Shinya Arino, which is acquired by playing “Arino Maker.” “Arino Maker Returns,” or “New! Arino Maker.” The second is a Totem Link costume featuring red, blue, and green link from The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. It’s available through the “Tri Force Heroes” level.

Levels containing Costume Mario rewards have a Mystery Mushroom to the left of their preview image and title, allowing a user to immediately see if a reward is available. The Shinya Arino and Totem Link costumes are immediately available in all regions after updating Super Mario Maker.
