<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Level 5 released Yo-kai Watch Busters, a multiplayer action RPG spin-off of the Yo-kai Watch series, for the Nintendo 3DS. Busters was released in two versions, and between the two it sold a combined total of 693,538 units. That isn’t as much as the last numbered Yo-kai Watch game, but for a spin-off it’s still an incredible figure.

Another major 3DS release last week was The Great Ace Attorney, which is the start of a brand new Ace Attorney series. The Great Ace Attorney sold 135,690 copies in its first week. Here’s how that compares to the debuts of the last two Ace Attorney games in the main series:

  • (2013) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies – 250,216
  • (2007) Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney – 250,186

While The Great Ace Attorney didn’t sell as much as as either Apollo Justice or Dual Destinies, it makes sense for it to have done lower numbers, given that it introduces a brand new cast of characters and a completely new storyline that existing fans are unfamiliar with. The Ace Attorney games sell due to the love their fans have for the series’ characters, and one would assume Capcom that The Great Ace Attorney will serve as an entry point for new and lapsed fans.

It should be interesting to see how the game does over the next few months, and how a sequel—should there ever be one—does as well. Until then, here’s some more Ace Attorney sales data if you’re curious.
