NetherRealm Studios recently streamed a good deal of footage from Mortal Kombat X’s story mode, with members of the development team that have worked on the game’s story pitching in with their thoughts and comments.
Mortal Kombat X takes place 25 years after the story of the previous Mortal Kombat game. The stream shows off a little bit of the game’s first chapter, with characters like Johnny Cage being demoed. On the stream, NetherRealm’s cinematic director, Dominic Cianciolo, also made an interesting remark about the game’s story.
“The story for Mortal Kombat X was inspired a lot by the second of the two Godfather films, in that we have the main story which is telling our primary adventure of dealing with Outworld and civil war with Mileena and Kotal Kahn and also the threat that everyone faces,” Cianciolo said. “But at the same time then, taking spots within the story itself to do flashbacks to wrap up how the last story ended—what transpired based on the cliffhanger we left there, and also allow us to get into the history of the new character we’d added and also find out how some older characters that are returning… what happened to them before we got to the main body of the story.”
You can watch the footage from the stream above. Mortal Kombat X will be released on April 14th. Last Friday, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm announced that Jason Voorhees will be a DLC character in the game, and will be included with the “Kombat Pack” DLC bundle, alongside three other characters. Additionally, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kenshi, and Shinnok were recently confirmed as playable characters, too.
