Sega’s free-to-play title Initial D: Perfect Shift Online did quite well on the Nintendo 3DS, as it’s been downloaded over 500,000 times as of October. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine reveals that it’s getting a sequel called Initial D: Perfect Shift Online 2nd Stage.

According to the report, 2nd Stage will be similar to the first game as far as gameplay goes, as you’ll get to customize and tune-up your car for some tight-drifting races. The sequel adds new scenarios and some more content as well.

Initial D: Perfect Shift Online 2nd Stage will also include characters from the series that you’ll get to go head-to-head against, and the new scenario will revolve around a mysterious Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II driver, among other new rivals.

As far as new content goes, 2nd Stage will allow you to purchase cars that are driven by other characters, such as Smiley Sakai’s Integra Type R DC2 and even Itsuki Takeuchi’s inferior AE85 Levin as well. The cars driven by other characters can also be fully customized to a competitive level, so you can have more choices for your downhill battles and technical courses.

The cards featuring various characters will also be there to provide players with special skills that can be used for races. There are up to 400 cards so you can make your own deck that will help you out during the races. Cards can also be combined as long as they’re the same names, for added skills.

Initial D: Perfect Shift Online 2nd Stage is expected to launch sometime this winter in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.
