Final Fantasy Explorers will get a demo with online multiplayer in just a few more days, so players in Japan will soon get to try it out for themselves. In a recent hands-on report, Famitsu showed off what it’s like to create characters and monsters in the demo.

The above is a look at the main character edit screen, with options such as name, gender, voice, face, and hairstyle. You might need to turn the volume a little bit higher to hear the voice in this video, but the face types show up after, including one that looks like Squall’s.

The player then checks out different hairstyles. The demo doesn’t seem to have too many, but the third one looks like it’ll be a fan-favorite. Following this, we get a look at female character creation.

The next video is about monster-creation in Final Fantasy Explorers, which starts out with the Monster Laboratory. Over here, you can check out all kinds of monsters and their details from the Spirit Stones.

Starting at the 1:20 mark, the Explorer embarks on a little trip with three monsters fighting by his side. Think of them as the equivalent of Monster Hunter’s Felynes. They’ll help you take on enemies and support you during your play.

The Spirit Stones needed to acquire the monsters come in different rarities, with Spirit Stones of rare and powerful monsters being a little more difficult to acquire.

Final Fantasy Explorers is slated for release in Japan on December 18, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.
