The Old Desert map has been around since the very first Monster Hunter game on PlayStation 2, and it’s coming back with some added features in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. The game’s official website gives us a closer look at it in its day and night forms.

Just like the regular Desert map, the Old Desert has both modes in day and night. During the day, it is known to be so hot that it chips away at the health of Hunters unless they have some refreshing Cold Drinks on them.

In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, the dunes now have more depth, and players can use them to their advantage to perform jump attacks against monsters.

However, not all the areas are as scorching hot, as there are various places with shade, including a spot where Felynes gather random objects. There’s also an oasis area that lets you climb trees, and it’s the area monsters will go when they’re low on stamina.

Just like deserts in the real world, the Old Desert map goes down to freezing temperatures during the night, so instead of Cold Drinks, you’ll need to make sure you take Hot Drinks.

We’ve all made the mistake of forgetting to check whether it’s day or night prior to jumping in the quest and taking the wrong drinks. It’s always a good idea to double check, just in case.

You’ll find different monsters out in the Old Desert during the night, and there will also be a few other differences compared to what goes on during the day.

You might even run into a few Felynes partying around a bon fire!

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is slated for release in Japan on October 11, 2014, and in the West in early 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.
