On September 13th, Nintendo released Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS in Japan. The game sold 944,644 copies at retail, and Japanese sales tracker Media Create reports that it sold through 93.45% of its shipment.
In comparison, 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii sold 819,647 copes at launch, and saw a sell-through of 94.37% of its shipment.
Additionally, Nintendo reported that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS sold 1 million copies in its first week if you were to count download sales of the game, so sales are already higher than retail figures are indicating.
The one thing to note is that Super Smash Bros. didn’t really do much for Nintendo 3DS sales. 3DS hardware sales only saw an increase of 10,000 units over the prior week, and this is likely because consumers are waiting for the release of the New Nintendo 3DS models, which launch on October 11th.
The question this obviously leaves us with is what to expect sales-wise from the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. That version of the game will be released sometime this Holiday, although Nintendo haven’t committed to a release date yet.
